Vitamin C

Vitamin C is used by the body for cell repair, especially skin cells and capillaries. It is also an antioxidant, combining with free radicals in the body. Free radicals damage the DNA and the structure of cells and is a primary cause of aging. So making sure that you get at least your daily minimum allowance of vitamin C is one of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy body.

A vitamin C deficiency will cause a terrible disease called scurvy. This disease results, in its early stages, in lethargy, and aching muscles and bones. Eventually it can result in loss of teeth, swelled gums, jaundice, insanity, and ultimately death. This was a very real problem in the early days of nautical exploration, when it was hard to take fresh foods on long journeys.

Vitamin C does not stay in the body. Because it is water soluble, unused vitamin C is passed through the body. So it must be constantly consumed. One way to do this is by taking supplements. But ideally, you will want to get your vitamin C from fruits of vegetables. A great way to do this is from citrus juice, where there are high concentrations of vitamin C. Fresh juice from a citrus juicer is the best solution.

Ascorbic acid is another name for vitamin C.
